SUMMARY:TRR 360 Seminar:Intertwined Orders in Correlated Quantum Matter: New Perspectives from Numerically Exact Simulations Tom Devereaux
DESCRIPTION:Intertwined Orders in Correlated Quantum Matter: New Perspectives from Numerically Exact Simulations \nProf. Dr. Tom P. Devereaux \nStanford University\, Stanford\, USA \n  \nStrong electronic interactions often produce multiple competing ordered states whose energies differ by only tiny amounts\, making theoretical predictions exceptionally challenging. In this talk I will describe how recent advances in unbiased numerical techniques are providing new insight into this problem using the Hubbard and Emery models as paradigmatic examples. Large-scale DMRG calculations reveal robust stripe ordering over broad regions of the phase diagram\, while finite-temperature DQMC identifies low-energy superconducting fluctuations through a new imaginary-time diagnostic that overcomes many traditional limitations imposed by the fermion sign problem. Extending these studies to the multiorbital Emery model demonstrates how oxygen degrees of freedom naturally generate intertwined charge stripes and nematicity beyond the single-band description. These results point toward a unified picture in which superconductivity\, charge order\, spin order\, and nematicity emerge from a landscape of nearly degenerate correlated states whose competition determines the observable properties of quantum materials. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue

SUMMARY:TRR 360 Seminar:Topological Spin-Orbitronics and Orbitronics for GreenITMathias Kläui
DESCRIPTION:Topological Spin-Orbitronics and Orbitronics for GreenIT \n\n \nProf. Dr. Mathias Kläui \n  \nInstitute of Physics\, University of Mainz \nCentre for Quantum Spintronics\, Norwegian University of Science and Technology\, Trondheim\, Norway \n  \nNovel spintronic devices can play a role in the quest for GreenIT if they are stable and can transport and manipulate spin with low power. Devices have been proposed\, where switching by energy-efficient approaches is used to manipulate topological spin structures [1]. \nWe combine ultimate stability of topological states due to chiral interactions [1] with ultra-efficient manipulation using novel spin torques [2]. In particular orbital torques increase the switching efficiency by more than a factor 10. Recently we have demonstrated that using correlated orbital magnets\, a factor 70 stronger interaction with orbital currents is found boding well for ultra-efficient manipulation [3]. \nWe use skyrmion dynamics for non-conventional stochastic computing applications\, where we developed skyrmion reshuffler devices based on skyrmion diffusion\, which also reveals the origin of skyrmion pinning. Such diffusion can furthermore be used for Token-based Brownian Computing and Reservoir Computing [4]. \n  \nReferences: \n1. K. Everschor-Sitte et al.\, J. Appl. Phys. 124\, 240901 (2018) \n2. S. SUMMARY:TRR 360 Seminar:Emergent phenomena in nanosculpted quantum material devicesMaximilian Birch
DESCRIPTION:Emergent phenomena in nanosculpted quantum material devices\n \nDr. Maximilian Birch \nRIKEN Center for Emergent Matter Science\, Japan \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nFocused ion beam (FIB) techniques enable precisely tailored nanoscale devices to be fabricated directly from high-quality single crystals\, providing a powerful platform for exploring emergent transport phenomena and unconventional experimental geometries. In this talk\, I will discuss the development and application of FIB-based device fabrication approaches used to investigate a range of quantum materials and functionalities\, including skyrmion dynamics\, p-wave magnetism\, and time-reversal symmetry breaking antiferromagnets. I will then present our recent development of three-dimensional nanosculpted FIB devices\, focusing on helical structures fabricated from the high-mobility Weyl ferromagnet Co₃Sn₂S₂. By introducing inversion symmetry breaking on the length scale of the electron mean free path\, these structures exhibit large nonreciprocal transport effects\, resulting in a switchable zero-field diode response. More broadly\, these results demonstrate how nanoscale geometric design can be used to access emergent electronic functionality in quantum materials. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue

SUMMARY:TRR 360 Sonderseminar: Emergent Magnetic Textures in Topological Materials Oleg Trietiakov
DESCRIPTION:Emergent Magnetic Textures in Topological Materials \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nProf. Oleg Trietiakov \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSchool of Physics\, University of New South Wales\, Sydney\, Australia \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nI will discuss emergent topological magnetic textures\, including skyrmions\, merons\, bimerons\, and antibimerons\, which form nanoscale chiral whirls in magnetic order. These textures are promising candidates for information carriers in next-generation electronic and spintronic devices because they can be efficiently driven at high velocities by current-induced spin torques. I will first focus on bimerons [1] and antibimerons [2] in ferromagnetic topological materials and discuss their spin-wave modes. I will then show that antiferromagnets can also host a rich variety of such textures\, offering advantages such as terahertz dynamics\, deflection-free motion [3]\, and improved size scaling due to the absence of stray fields. Finally\, I will demonstrate that merons and bimerons can be generated at room temperature and reversibly moved by electrical pulses in both antiferromagnetic [4] and ferromagnetic systems [5]. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nReferences:[1] B. SUMMARY:TRR 360 Seminar:Paramagnetic limit of spin-triplet superconductors Thomas Bernat
DESCRIPTION:Paramagnetic limit of spin-triplet superconductors \nDr. Thomas Bernat \nDepartment of Physics and Astronomy\, Uppsala University\, Sweden \n  \nAn upper critical field above the Pauli limit is often taken as a hint of spin-triplet pairing\, since equal-spin triplet pairs are insensitive to the Zeeman field. In real materials\, however\, strong spin-orbit coupling pins the d-vector to the crystal axes. Generically\, the condensate is then a mixture of equal-spin and opposite-spin pairs for any field direction.I’ll present two main results. First\, all triplet states are Pauli limited at finite temperature\, but this limit diverges as a power law when T ¡æ 0. Second\, for a d-vector with fixed direction and a slightly tilted field\, the phase diagram becomes surprisingly rich. Two tricritical points appear along the upper critical line\, with a first-order transition between them\, and a first-order line between two distinct superconducting phases can also emerge. I’ll show how a Landau expansion to eighth order in the gap explains this structure.Finally\, we’ll discuss UPt3\, where the model predicts a strongly temperature-dependent H_c2 anisotropy at low T. This calls for measurements at lower temperatures than those done so far. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue

SUMMARY:TRR 360 Seminar:How quantum is quantum geometry? Ady Stern
DESCRIPTION:How quantum is quantum geometry? \nProf. Dr. Ady Stern \nCondensed Matter Physics\, Weizmann Institute\, Rehovot\, Israel \n  \nThe quantum geometric tensor – the Berry curvature together with the quantum metric – now underlies a long list of observables\, from the anomalous Hall effect to the superfluid weight of a flat band. We ask which of these observables actually require quantum mechanics. We find that most of them do not. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue

SUMMARY:TRR 360 Seminar:A fresh look on frustration: spin-Peierls Transition in spinels and Curie-law crossoverLudovic Jaubert
DESCRIPTION:A fresh look on frustration: spin-Peierls Transition in spinels and Curie-law crossover\n \nProf. Dr. Ludovic Jaubert \nLaboratoire Ondes et Matière d’AquitaineUniversity of Bordeaux\, France \n  \nIn this seminar\, we will provide a fresh look on two canonical questions in frustrated magnetism: transitions in spinels and the Curie-Weiss law. \nThe chromium spinels (e.g. MgCr2O4\, ZnCr2O4 …) are prime examples of the highly frustrated pyrochlore lattice antiferromagnet. Experiment has carefully established that these materials\, upon cooling\, distort to lower symmetry and order magnetically. Here we will study the nature of the transition by a combination of density-functional-theory based energy mapping and classical Monte Carlo simulations [1\,2]. Based on ab-initio Hamiltonian parameters\, we will simulate both materials and estimate the respective ordering temperatures of the high- and low-symmetry structures. Comparing our results with experiments\, we find that simulations are consistent with a type of spin-Peierls mechanism\, adapted to three dimensions\, where the structural distortion is mediated by a magnetic energy gain thanks to a lower degree of frustration. \nIn a second part\, we will revisit the textbook Curie-Weiss law\, in the context of frustration. The Curie-Weiss law is widely used to estimate the strength of frustration in frustrated magnets. However\, this law was originally derived as an estimate of magnetic correlations close to a mean-field phase transition\, which—by definition—is absent in spin liquids. Instead\, the susceptibility of spin liquids undergoes a Curie-law crossover between two magnetically disordered regimes. Here\, we study the generic aspect of the Curie-law crossover by comparing a variety of frustrated spin models in two and three dimensions [3]\, using both classical Monte Carlo simulations and analytical Husimi tree calculations. Husimi tree calculations fit remarkably well the simulations for all temperatures and almost all lattices. Based on this result\, we propose a Husimi ansatz for the magnetic susceptibility 𝜒⁢\, in order to estimate the Curie-Weiss temperature 𝜃cw. We apply the Ansatz to experimental measurements of various frustrated materials\, showing that it fits the data as well\, if not better\, than the traditional Curie-Weiss law. \n[1] Jeschke\, Iqbal & Jaubert\, Physical Review Letters 134\, 086702 (2025)[2] Jeschke\, Iqbal & Jaubert\, in preparation[3] Pohle & Jaubert\, Physical Review B 108\, 024411 (2023) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue
